A prayer journal
prompt sheet you can print

Two pages. Thirty-one prompts, one for each day and undated, so it doesn't matter what month you start or how many days you skip — plus a card you cut out and keep inside the cover for the mornings you sit down with nothing.

The sheet

Thirty-One Mornings — a two-page PDF, US Letter, designed to print cleanly in black and white on an ordinary home printer.

What's on it

Page one

Thirty-one mornings, one question each

A month of prompts in four movements — getting honest, asking for something, other people, and harder ground — with three at the end that look back over the month. Numbered rather than dated, with a tick box, so a missed week doesn't turn into a reason to quit. Day thirty asks what you were asking for on day one, which is the only question on the sheet you can't answer without having kept the other twenty-nine.

Page two

The card for the mornings you're not fine

Prompts sorted by the state you're actually in: angry, bored with it, not sure you believe it today, grieving, or carrying something. Cut along the dashed line and tuck it inside the front cover. Most prompt lists are written for a good morning, and a list that only works when you're already willing is a list that fails exactly when you need one.

A prompt is a door, not a room. Answer it in one line and keep going.

How to use it without ruining it

The failure mode is that the prompt becomes the content. You answer it completely, neatly, in four sentences — and then stop, because the exercise is finished. That's a worksheet.

Use it as a first line instead. Answer in a single sentence, then carry on writing whatever that sentence turned up. If nothing follows, that's a real answer too, and the page is allowed to be one line long. A few weeks in you'll notice the prompt getting in the way, and you'll be answering a question you didn't need asked. That's the goal, not a problem — stop using them and keep the card for the mornings you stall.

Printing notes

It is set for US Letter at 100% — don't let the print dialog scale it to fit, or the cut line on page two will move. Black and white is fine; nothing on either page depends on colour. If you only want the card, print page two on its own. Printing page one on card stock makes it survive a month on a nightstand, but ordinary paper is what I use.

If you want the next one

The sheet above is yours either way — there's no wall in front of it. But new guides and sheets go out to the list first, and the list is the only place I write at any length about what actually holds up over a year of this rather than a fortnight.
